A unique characteristic of American education is that accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental and self-regulatory practice. It serves the purpose of quality assurance and improvement and that of gatekeeper for the U.S. Department of Education for attesting to the required level of quality of its member institutions.
There are 6 accrediting bodies that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for non-professional schools. These regulatory
commissions assure quality of the institutions across the States they represent.

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)
New England Association of Colleges and Schools (NEASC)
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (CIHE/NCA)
Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWASC)
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SASC)
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

Regional accreditation is the highest form of accreditation a school can boast because these accrediting bodies set the bar at the highest level of quality. Being regionally accredited means an entire school, with all its programs, has been deemed acceptable by a regional body, which in turn has been deemed acceptable by the U.S. department of education. Also, with a degree from a regionally accredited institution, students can more easily transfer from school to school. All academic programs offered at American National College are from accredited universities. Patten University is accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) which accredits prestigious California based universities like Stanford, Berkeley & UCLA. Northwood University and UMR are accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which also accredits :

University of Colorado
University of Minnesota
University of Chicago
Arizona State University
Purdue University
