Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. Neuroscience, perception, memory, personality, emotion, stress and health, abnormal behavior, and social relations are among the basic topics of psychological research. The discipline also involves the application of basic research to improve the quality of life and work. Clinical practice, school counseling, team work and leadership in organizations and ergonomics in industry are among the many areas of applied psychology.

The statistics and experimental psychology courses required of our majors prepare you to engage in undergraduate research in your junior or senior years. By collaborating with a faculty member on a research project, you will gain valuable experience for subsequent graduate studies in psychology and related fields or for employment.

The department offers a choice of two degrees for majors. The Bachelor of Science degree provides a solid foundation in mathematics, biological sciences, physical sciences, and computer science. The Bachelor of Arts degree provides broad liberal arts foundation, including courses in western civilization and foreign languages.

The innovative curriculum at UMR is unlike any other in the United States . In addition to providing a strong psychology major, students may opt to develop a special emphasis in any of five areas: human resources/personnel psychology, human services, cognitive neuroscience, usability of technology, and psychology of leadership.

Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Technology

The IT degree at UMR has been created to meet the growing need in industry for professionals who have information technology skills merged with business skills that go outside the scope of traditional programs in Computer Science and Engineering. With a BS or MS in IST from UMR, you are prepared to take advantage of the exponential growth in the number of jobs within the Information Technology industry.

Classes taken by students in the IT program will include a core set of courses that will provide them with understanding of programming concepts, data structures, tools for project control, web design, database essentials, computer internals, Internet applications, telecommunications networks, computer networking, technology management, and E-commerce. You will then have the opportunity to take a set of three courses to emphasize an area of interest. One possible emphasis is to study the aspects needed for effective and usable computer interfaces (Human-Computer Interaction). Another possible emphasis area is one that focuses on the foundation computer systems that integrate information for organizations (Enterprise Resource Planning).
